Dodge Avenger gen 2 2008–2014 Transmission Failures Seen in Real Service Bays
Overview
The second-generation Dodge Avenger (2008–2014) is one of those cars that shows up in the shop a lot. Not always broken. But often enough that you get familiar with its personality. And yeah, the personality mostly lives in the tranny.
This platform rides on Chrysler’s JS architecture. Front-wheel-drive layout, transverse drivetrain, the usual Chrysler hardware from that era. Under the hood you’ll find three transmissions depending on engine: the 40TES, the 41TES, and the newer 62TE six-speed automatic.
Simple story. Old four-speed units versus the newer electronically managed six-speed.
I’ve worked on a lot of these over the years. The four-speeds? Basic. Almost boring. Fluid changes keep them alive a long time. The six-speed 62TE is a different animal. Better performance, smoother on paper, but way more sensitive to software calibration and adaptive shift logic. When the programming gets weird, the whole drivetrain starts acting like it had a bad morning.
NHTSA complaint records show a consistent pattern with this platform: harsh shifting, limp mode episodes, and the famous “stuck in Park” problem. None of those mean the tranny has exploded, but they definitely ruin your day when they show up.
This isn’t a ticking time bomb drivetrain. But it’s also not bulletproof. Maintenance and software updates matter a lot more than owners usually realize.

Early 2008 Avengers equipped with the 3.5L V6 could also be ordered with all-wheel drive. Those cars add a power transfer unit, rear driveshaft, electronic coupling, and rear differential. More hardware. More things to leak later.
For the U.S. market those three transmissions are it. No hidden alternatives. No surprise CVT experiments.
Main Failure Patterns
Stuck In Park — The Shifter Problem
This one shows up constantly in owner complaints. Customer walks in frustrated. Car runs fine. Engine starts. But the shifter refuses to leave Park.
Classic brake-shift interlock failure.
In the shop we usually find one of four things:
- Interlock solenoid failure
- Worn shifter mechanism
- Shift cable bushing deterioration
- Brake switch communication failure
The tranny itself isn’t damaged. It’s basically trapped in Park by the shifter assembly. Replace the failed part and everything works again. Annoying problem. But not catastrophic.
62TE Harsh Downshift Bump
This is the one I see the most on the six-speed cars.
Customer complaint usually sounds like this:
- “It jerks when I slow down.”
- “Feels like someone tapped the bumper.”
- “It slams into gear when stopping.”
That’s the 3-2 downshift bump. Classic 62TE behavior when the adaptive shift values get confused.
Chrysler released several TSB updates for this. The repair usually involves reprogramming the PCM and resetting adaptive learning values. Basically wiping the tranny’s memory so it can relearn shift pressures.
In my experience this works more often than people expect. I’ve seen cars go from jerky and ridiculous to smooth again after a calibration update.
No metal shavings. No internal damage. Just software behaving badly.
Limp Mode Events
Another pattern shows up in complaint databases: sudden loss of acceleration.
Driver steps on the gas. Car barely moves. Transmission locked into one gear. Check engine light glowing like a Christmas bulb.
That’s limp mode.
The system does it intentionally when it detects a serious fault. Think of it as the drivetrain protecting itself from lunching gears.
Common causes I see in the shop:
- Solenoid pack failures
- Range sensor faults
- Electrical connector corrosion
- Internal clutch wear on higher-mileage units
Fluid condition plays a big role here. Burnt fluid, debris, worn clutches. The control system sees something weird and throws the drivetrain into protection mode.

Clutch Wear At Higher Mileage
Eventually some of these transmissions just wear out. Happens with any automatic.
Once you get past about 90,000 to 120,000 Miles (145,000–193,000 km), the internal clutch packs start showing their age in some units.
Symptoms usually include:
- Delayed engagement into Drive
- Slipping during acceleration
- Overheating fluid
When the clutch material starts shedding, you’ll often find fine debris in the pan. Nothing dramatic. Just shavings and worn friction material.
At that point the fix isn’t a band-aid. The tranny needs a rebuild.
AWD Hardware Wear
Early AWD Avengers are a different conversation.
Extra hardware means extra failure points. The power transfer unit can develop leaks, output seals seep fluid, and driveshaft joints can start vibrating once mileage climbs.
I’ve seen plenty of these come in with PTU fluid cooked black. Nobody ever services it. Eventually seals harden and the unit starts sweating gear oil.

Most Avenger repairs fall in the cheaper half of that table. Software updates, solenoid packs, shift linkage repairs. Full transmission replacements happen, but they’re not the common outcome.

You can catch most transmission problems early if you pay attention during a test drive.
- Hard shifts once the car warms up
- Clunk when slowing to a stop
- Transmission slipping during acceleration
- Vehicle stuck in Park
- Transmission fault codes stored in the module
A proper diagnostic scan tells you a lot. I’ve caught failing solenoids and pressure issues long before the driver noticed anything unusual.
Fluid inspection matters too. Burnt smell, dark fluid, metallic debris in the pan. Those are clues the clutch packs are wearing down.
When to Walk Away
Used car shopping? Watch for these red flags.
- Transmission slips during moderate acceleration
- Repeated harsh downshifts after warmup
- Limp mode during a test drive

A high-mileage Avenger with those symptoms may be sitting on a rebuild bill worth more than the car.

Owners who actually service the fluid and keep the software updated usually avoid the worst problems. The ones who ignore it… well, they’re the customers paying for rebuilds later.

Transmission issues on this generation of Dodge Avenger generated a steady stream of NHTSA complaints. Most reports describe harsh shifting, sudden loss of power, or vehicles stuck in Park.
The manufacturer addressed most drivability complaints through technical service bulletins that update powertrain control module software and reset transmission adaptive learning values.
Many used vehicles never received those updates. Which means buyers sometimes inherit the exact problems the TSBs were designed to fix.

The 2008–2014 Dodge Avenger drivetrain lands somewhere in the middle of the reliability spectrum.
The 40TES and 41TES four-speed units are simple and durable. Old school. The 62TE six-speed adds performance and efficiency but also brings more electronics and calibration quirks.
