Overview
The 2019–present Toyota RAV4 is not a fragile drivetrain platform. Let’s get that out of the way.
I’ve worked on these since they hit the ground in 2019. Gas models, hybrids, fleet units with brutal mileage. The transmissions themselves? They’re not grenade-prone. But that doesn’t mean this setup is flawless. The issues are configuration-specific, and if you buy the wrong trim in the wrong climate, you can absolutely inherit a mess.
Gas models run the UA80-series 8-speed automatic. Hybrid and Prime models use the P710 power-split eCVT. AWD setups split into three flavors: conventional mechanical rear differential, Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with disconnect hardware, and hybrid eAWD with a rear motor-generator and no driveshaft at all.
The weak spots aren’t geartrain explosions. They’re calibration quirks, disconnect clutch noise, and corrosion where Toyota assumed the underbody would live a clean suburban life. That assumption doesn’t hold up in salt states.
And yes, there’s regulatory history here. TSBs for hesitation. TSBs for AWD noise. Then Customer Support Program 22TE09 for rear motor cable corrosion on 2019–2024 Hybrid AWD and 2021–2024 Prime models. That one matters. If you own one, you check the VIN. Every time.

No alternative transmissions. No secret mid-cycle swap. If it’s U.S.-market XA50, it’s one of those three.
Main Failure Patterns
Shift Hesitation – Early 2019 UA80 Calibration
This one annoyed people more than it broke cars.
Early 2019 builds had a hesitation at low speed. Rolling stop, throttle tip-in, nothing happens for a split second. Then it grabs. Feels like the tranny forgot what gear it wanted. I’ve driven it. Customers hate it.
Below about 6 mph (10 km/h), right after a 3–1 downshift, light throttle input. That’s when it showed up.
Toyota released T-SB-0107-19. ECM reflash. Fixes most of it. This was not a mechanical failure. No shredded clutches. No lunching gears. Just calibration that wasn’t sorted before launch.
I’ve seen dozens of these. Once flashed, they behave.
Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD Noise
Now we get to the over-engineered stuff.
Adventure and Limited gas trims with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD use a rear disconnect system with dog clutches. On paper? Clever. In practice? Early production was noisy.
Buzz at 20–30 mph (32–48 km/h). Clunk from a stop. Ratcheting feel. Some owners thought the rear diff was grenading. It wasn’t exploding, but it was ugly.
TSBs T-SB-0065-19, T-SB-0067-20, and T-SB-0022-22 addressed front transfer clutch components and rear differential internals. In my bay, some needed full rear differential replacement. Others just updated components.
This issue sticks mostly to 2019–2020 builds. Standard AWD models don’t see it. FWD obviously doesn’t care.
It’s not catastrophic. But out of warranty? It’s expensive and irritating.
Rear Motor Cable Corrosion – CSP 22TE09
This is the one I pay attention to.
2019–2024 RAV4 Hybrid AWD. 2021–2024 Prime. Rear motor cable at the motor-generator.
Water and salt intrusion. Corrosion builds at the connector. Then you get DTCs like P0AA649 or P1C8049. AWD warning. Hybrid malfunction. Sometimes reduced rear drive assist. I’ve seen cases between 40,000 and 60,000 Miles (64,000–96,000 km) in rust belt states. Down south? Almost never.
Toyota rolled out CSP 22TE09 to extend coverage. That tells you something. When a manufacturer expands coverage on an electrical driveline component, it’s because field data stacked up.
If you’re buying one used in Michigan, Ohio, New York, you inspect that cable. Period.
Axle Seal Seepage – Gas AWD
This is minor. But it’s common enough to mention.
Gas AWD units sometimes show seepage at the PTU or differential axle seals between 40,000–80,000 Miles (64,000–129,000 km). Usually a damp film. Not a gusher.
Ignore it long enough and you’ll start seeing bearing wear. I’ve drained units that smelled cooked because someone thought “it’s just a little wet.”
P710 Hybrid Transaxle Durability
The P710 is stout. I’ll give Toyota that.
No stepped gears. No clutch packs shifting back and forth. It’s a planetary power-split with motor-generators doing the heavy lifting. I’ve seen hybrids past 150,000 Miles (241,000 km) with clean internals and zero metal shavings.
Fluid gets hot. Over 200°F (93°C) under load isn’t rare. Toyota calls it lifetime fluid under normal service. That’s optimistic.
In my experience, servicing it every 60,000–75,000 Miles (96,000–120,000 km) keeps it happy. Skip it, and you’re gambling long-term wear for short-term savings.

I rarely see full UA80 replacements. It happens, but it’s not common. Most of the big bills come from AWD hardware, not the core tranny.

Early 2019 units are the ones I inspect hardest. Later builds are calmer.
Warning Signs & Early Detection
- Hesitation from a rolling stop
- Buzzing or clunk from rear during torque transfer
- AWD malfunction light
- Hybrid warning with corrosion-related DTCs
- Fluid residue around PTU or differential seals
Pre-purchase checklist in my shop is simple. Full scan. Low-speed drive cycle. Visual check of rear motor cable on hybrid AWD. Confirm CSP 22TE09 status. If a seller resists that, I start asking why.
When to Walk Away
Visible rear cable corrosion and no CSP eligibility. That’s a red flag.
Repeated rear diff replacements? Walk. Something deeper is off.
Persistent AWD warnings with no documented fix? Not worth the gamble.
This platform isn’t a ticking time bomb. But neglected corrosion on hybrid AWD models can turn into one.

Lifetime fluid claims always make me laugh. Fluids break down. Heat wins. It’s physics, not marketing.
Lawsuits, Complaints & Regulatory History
No class action targeting the UA80 or P710 directly.
NHTSA complaints clustered around 2019 for hesitation and AWD noise. Nothing showing systemic internal transmission failure. No engineering analysis flagging the core gearbox.
CSP 22TE09 is the big one. That program exists because corrosion patterns showed up in the field. Manufacturers don’t extend coverage for fun.
Bottom Line
The 2019–present RAV4 drivetrain is solid. Not flashy. Not fragile.
Gas UA80 units hold up. Hybrid P710 units are tough. The real risk is trim-specific: early Torque Vectoring AWD hardware and hybrid rear motor cable corrosion in salt-heavy regions.
Maintain it. Service the fluid. Inspect the underbody. Verify VIN coverage.
Do that, and this platform will usually run a long time without the tranny ever seeing the inside of a rebuild bench.
