The 2014–2019 Toyota Highlander. Third generation. XU50 chassis. And from a transmission standpoint, it’s really two different animals wearing the same sheet metal.
2014 through 2016? Old-school 6-speed. Solid. Predictable. Boring in a good way.
2017 through 2019? New 8-speed. More efficient. More complicated. And for a couple of years there, a little messy.
If you’re shopping one of these, the badge doesn’t matter. The trim doesn’t matter. The transmission code does. That’s where the story is.
Let’s get this out of the way early. Toyota issued Customer Support Program ZJC (policy bulletin POL19-04) for certain 2017–2018 Highlanders equipped with the UA80E and UA80F 8-speed transmissions. This wasn’t a recall. No federal mandate. Toyota handled it internally.
The problem? A retaining nut inside the transmission wasn’t properly secured because the lock tab wasn’t bent enough during assembly. Sounds minor. It’s not. Over time that nut can loosen. When it does, you start hearing a whine under load. Then the shifts get rough. Then you see transmission pressure control codes. Then you’re in reduced power mode wondering why your family SUV feels like it’s dying.
I’ve seen dozens of these come in with that exact progression.
Coverage was extended to 10 years from first use with no mileage cap. Good move. If you’re looking at a 2017–2018, you verify VIN eligibility. Always. Toyota’s TIS system or the NHTSA VIN lookup will tell you if it’s covered or already repaired.
There were also T-SB-0160-18 (replacement procedure for affected 8-speed units) and T-SB-0194-17 (ECM reflash for early shift flare and hesitation). AWD models got technical guidance under T-TT-0659-21 for rear differential coupling overheating from improper towing or prolonged wheel spin.
So no, this platform isn’t a ticking time bomb across the board. But some build ranges? You want to pay attention.

This is Toyota’s Direct Shift 8-speed. Tighter ratios. Better fuel economy. More software dependency. When it’s working right, it’s smooth. When it’s not, it feels confused and busy.
Hybrid models used the P314 hybrid transaxle (eCVT). Different animal entirely. Mechanically simpler in some ways, electrically complex in others. The geared automatic issues don’t apply there.
No alternative geared transmissions were offered in this generation. That’s the lineup.
Main Failure Patterns
UA80E / UA80F Retention Nut Issue (CSP ZJC)
This is the headline defect. The one you actually need to care about.
The lock tab on a retaining nut inside the transmission wasn’t bent enough during assembly. Over time, vibration backs that nut off. When it moves, internal components don’t stay where they’re supposed to. You get a whine. Sometimes faint. Sometimes obvious. It rises with throttle.
Then the shift quality goes sideways. Harsh 2–3. Weird 3–4. Maybe a flare. Eventually, you’ll see DTCs tied to pressure control or clutch performance. I’ve opened units where the fluid had fine metallic shavings suspended in it — not glitter, but enough to tell you things were wearing that shouldn’t be wearing.
If caught under CSP ZJC, Toyota replaced the entire transaxle with a reman unit. Not a band-aid fix. Full swap. If you’re outside that coverage window, you’re writing a check.
Most cases I’ve seen were 2017 builds and early 2018. By 2019, complaint frequency dropped off hard.
Early 8-Speed Calibration Issues (T-SB-0194-17)
Some 2017 Highlanders just felt wrong from the factory.
High RPM 2–3 upshift. Hesitation pulling into traffic. That awkward half-second delay where you press the pedal and nothing happens, then it lunges. Customers thought the tranny was slipping. Most of the time it wasn’t mechanical. It was software.
Toyota released an ECM reprogramming update. Once flashed, most of them drove normally. The ones that didn’t? I’d start looking deeper.
Rear Differential Coupler Overheating (AWD)

If someone flat-towed it wrong. If they buried it in snow and sat there spinning for five minutes straight. You cook that coupling.

U660E / U660F Long-Term Wear
The 6-speed units from 2014–2016 are solid. I’ve seen plenty past 180,000 Miles (290,000 km).
When they start aging, it’s predictable. Slight delay going into Drive. A little torque converter shudder under light throttle. Maybe a soft flare between gears. Not dramatic. Just wear.
They don’t usually grenade without warning.

Let’s talk about the “lifetime fluid” idea.
Toyota markets WS fluid as lifetime under normal use. I’ve been in this industry long enough to know that “lifetime” usually means “until the warranty expires.” Fluid breaks down. Heat kills it. Urban stop-and-go driving pushes transmission temps over 200°F (93°C) regularly.
I recommend drain-and-fill service around 60,000–80,000 Miles (96,000–128,000 km). That’s not in the glossy brochure. It’s what keeps clutch material from turning into sludge.

Lawsuits, Complaints & Regulatory History
There hasn’t been a major class action settlement tied specifically to these Highlander transmissions.
NHTSA complaint clustering is strongest in 2017–2018 model years, mostly around shift quality, hesitation, and warning lights. That lines up with CSP ZJC and the related technical service bulletins.
No federal recall was issued for the retention nut defect. Toyota addressed it through voluntary extended coverage instead.
I’ve seen manufacturers do worse.
Bottom Line
The 2014–2016 Highlander with U660E or U660F is dependable. Straightforward. Hard to scare.
The 2017–2018 models with UA80E or UA80F require homework. Not panic. Homework.
By 2019, stability improved.
