Main Failure Patterns

AWD PTU Heat Damage — The Big One

This is the failure everyone remembers.

SSP92 spells it out: high oil temperature inside the PTU under sustained load or high-speed driving leads to reduced lubrication. The needle bearings can move. Once they move, they fail. Once they fail, the gears start chewing. Then the case cracks or leaks.

Messy failure.

In the shop, here’s what it looks like:

  • Customer drives 75 mph (121 km/h) on the interstate for long stretches
  • Ambient temps above 90°F (32°C)

  • PTU oil cooking quietly

No warning light. Just heat.
