How the Mazda 3 gen 4 2019–present Transmission Actually Fails

Recall 19V497000 (Mazda Campaign 3719F)
This recall hits certain 2019 model year vehicles. It’s a PCM software issue that can cause the engine to stall. Stall events affect torque management. Torque management affects shift strategy. So yes, even if the recall headline says “engine stall,” it absolutely interacts with transmission behavior.
If you’re buying one, run the VIN. NHTSA site or dealer lookup. No exceptions.

Main Failure Patterns
Low-Speed Surge in 1st Gear (TSB 05-002/20 → 05-004/23)

Shift Shock or RPM Flare When Activating MRCC (TSB 15-001/20)
This one is subtle.
You’re cruising. Activate Mazda Radar Cruise Control. The RPM bumps. Maybe a small shift shock.
Again — software. The PCM torque request and transmission control logic weren’t playing nicely together.
Reflash fixes it. No torn-down tranny. No valve body swap. If someone tries to sell you hard parts for this complaint, walk away.
Rear Differential Housing Cracking — AWD (SA-033-21)
This is where things get serious.
The AWD system uses a coupling assembly with a sliding bearing. Mazda documented cases where that bearing seized. When it seizes, the coupling alignment goes sideways. The pinion shaft head starts contacting the differential housing.
Metal meets aluminum. Aluminum loses.
The housing cracks.

This one is technician-induced.
Some replacement FW6A-EL units ship with blank TCM configuration data. If the installer skips proper programming, you get DTC P163E.
The tranny isn’t bad. The software wasn’t loaded.
Seen it more than once. Easy fix if you know what you’re doing. Headache if you don’t.

Here’s something Mazda doesn’t emphasize enough — fluid service.
The automatic doesn’t have a strict change interval in the maintenance guide. I don’t buy into “lifetime fluid.” That phrase is a joke across the industry.
In real service bays, fluid darkening shows up around 60,000–80,000 Miles (96,000–128,000 km). High ambient heat — 100°F (38°C) summers — accelerates that.
The AWD differential holds a small fluid volume. Small volume means faster contamination concentration. I like inspecting or servicing it around 30,000–40,000 Miles (48,000–64,000 km). Cheap insurance.
When to Walk Away

The FW6A-EL automatic itself? Solid. Durable. I don’t see these units coming apart internally unless abused.
