Overview
The 2014–2021 Mazda 6. Third gen. GJ and later GL chassis. Front-wheel drive only in the U.S. No AWD. No CVT. No dual-clutch experiment gone wrong. Just a conventional transaxle bolted to a 2.5L four-cylinder and sent out into the world.
From a Master Tech standpoint, this platform is refreshingly simple. One automatic family the whole run. Manual available early on, then gone. No exotic transfer cases. No PTU nightmares. No rear diff leaks because—there is no rear diff.
What you get instead are a handful of very specific transmission behaviors that show up in real service bays. Some are annoying. A couple are expensive. None of them qualify as ticking time bombs across the entire generation.
And before we go further—there were no federal recalls targeting the transmission assembly itself. Everything transmission-related was handled through Technical Service Bulletins. That matters. TSBs mean drivability and durability complaints. Recalls mean safety. This never crossed that line.

This is the only automatic used in the U.S. for this generation. No alternative automatic. No mid-cycle swap. Mazda stuck with it the whole time.
The FW6A-EL is a conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic. Lock-up strategy is aggressive. Clutch-to-clutch shifting. Fairly tight gear spacing. It’s not some fragile CVT experiment. It’s old-school enough to be serviceable but modern enough to be sensitive to fluid condition.
G66M-R (SKYACTIV-MT)

Manual was offered early, then quietly dropped. Low take rate. I’ve seen far fewer manual failures simply because there are fewer cars out there.
No AWD. No transfer case. No PTU. Straight FWD transaxle layout the entire generation.
Main Failure Patterns
Oil Pressure Switch DTCs – FW6A-EL
This is the one most people run into first.
TSB 05-005/14 and later 05-004/18 address DTCs like P0842, P0847, P0872, P0877, P0780, P1738. Check Engine Light on. A/T light on. Customer says “it shifted weird once and now it’s angry.”
The issue centers around oil pressure switches A and B inside the valve body. Contamination, sticking, erratic signal reporting. Mazda updated parts and calibration logic.
In my experience, I see this between 60,000 and 120,000 miles (97,000–193,000 km). Sometimes earlier on 2014–2015 builds. It’s not the whole tranny grenading. It’s the control side getting confused.
Ignore it long enough and you’ll start feeling harsh shifts. Then you’re into deeper wear because hydraulic control pressure gets sloppy. That’s when shavings start circulating. And once that happens, you’re not doing a cheap fix anymore.
Early Production Whine – FW6A-EL
Early 2014 builds had a documented whining noise issue. TSB 05-008/16 covers it. Noise shows up above about 10 mph (16 km/h). Doesn’t track engine RPM. Tracks road speed.
I’ve driven a few of these. It’s not subtle. It’s a steady, mechanical whine that makes you think differential bearing. But it’s internal to the transmission assembly.
Mazda’s fix? Replace the whole unit. For affected VIN ranges, the remedy wasn’t a band-aid. It was a full swap.
Outside those early VINs, I don’t see this issue repeating. It’s very build-specific.
Shift Shock at Elevation
TSB 05-003/18. Shift shock into 3rd, 5th, or reverse when operating above roughly 3,300 ft (1,000 m).
This one confuses people. They think the tranny is lunching gears. It’s not. It’s calibration. The TCM pressure tables didn’t compensate smoothly for thinner air. Engagement feels abrupt.
Reflash. Relearn procedure. Done.
No metal. No clutch debris. Just software behaving badly.
Manual Transmission 3rd/4th Gear Issues – G66M-R
TSB 05-001/15 addresses hard shifting into 3rd and 4th. Sometimes gear disengagement. Sometimes shift lever vibration.
I’ve torn down a couple of these. Synchronizer wear and internal component revisions were the story. No external adjustment saves you here. If it pops out of 3rd under load, the box comes out.
Most cases show up before 90,000 miles (145,000 km). Not a widespread epidemic. But when it happens, it’s labor-heavy. You’re pulling the transaxle. There’s no shortcut.
Right Front Driveshaft Squeak
TSB 03-002/18. Squeak from the right front area. Dust cover interacting with the transfer oil seal.
Sounds like a cheap CV joint. It isn’t. Replace the dust cover and seal, noise gone.
This is nuisance-level stuff. Not catastrophic.

A full automatic replacement will total a high-mileage car fast. I’ve seen owners shocked when the quote lands north of six grand.
Valve body jobs are where you want the problem to stay. Once metal starts circulating, the cheap repair window closes.

2014 requires VIN scrutiny. I don’t panic on later GL refresh models. They behave better in the field.
Warning Signs & Early Detection
- Whine that increases with road speed above 10 mph (16 km/h)
- Harsh 3rd or reverse engagement
- P0842 / P0847 family codes stored in TCM
- Manual resistance into 3rd gear
- Shift lever vibration on moderate-speed drives
Fluid condition tells stories. Burnt smell suggests sustained temps north of about 220°F (104°C). Dark, gritty fluid with visible shavings? That’s when I start talking about long-term damage.
Professional scan before buying one of these is smart. Cheap insurance.
When to Walk Away
Early 2014 VIN with confirmed whine. I’m cautious.
Repeated pressure switch codes after previous repairs? That’s a red flag. Either the repair was slapped on or internal wear is already progressing.
Manual that pops out of 3rd under throttle. Walk.
Metal in the fluid. Walk faster.

Manufacturers love the phrase “lifetime fluid.” In my world, lifetime means “until the warranty expires.”
I’ve seen these go past 150,000 miles (241,000 km) cleanly with regular fluid service. I’ve also seen neglected ones get rough early. Same hardware. Different outcome.

No verified class action litigation specific to the FW6A-EL or G66M-R in this generation.
NHTSA complaints cluster around 2014–2015 for shift harshness, warning lights, and transmission noise. Those align with the documented TSBs. There was no federal recall for the transmission assembly.
These issues lived in service bulletins, not safety campaigns. That tells you the severity profile.
Bottom Line
This isn’t a ticking time bomb platform.
Early 2014 builds carry the highest transmission-specific risk due to documented bearing configuration concerns. After that, most problems are manageable—pressure switches, calibration, the occasional manual synchronizer job.
Maintain the fluid. Scan for codes. Verify VIN against known early build issues.
Do that, and this drivetrain will usually treat you well. Neglect it, ignore warning lights, let it cook its fluid—and any tranny will eventually get expensive.
