Main Failure Patterns

Automatic Fluid Neglect

I’ll say it bluntly: these automatics hate dirty fluid.

Mazda specified ATF M-V. Shops that dumped universal fluid in because “it’ll be fine” created shift complaints that show up years later. I’ve seen it dozens of times.

Sometimes it is. Sometimes it just needs a valve body.

Above 120,000 miles (193,000 km), this becomes common. Catch it early and you’re looking at a repair. Ignore it and the clutches burn. Then it’s rebuild time.

TCC Shudder

You’re cruising at 40–55 mph (64–88 km/h). Light throttle. The car vibrates like you drove over rumble strips.

That’s the torque converter clutch slipping and grabbing. Dirty fluid is the usual suspect. Once the lining starts shedding, it contaminates the whole unit. A simple drain-and-fill can fix early shudder. Wait too long and you’re pricing converters.

Manual Transmission Reality

The G35M-R and A65M-R gearboxes are solid. I don’t see gear failures unless someone’s abusing them or running the fluid dry.

  • Hydraulic release bearing leaks

The AWD system uses a separate transfer case and rear diff with GL-5 gear oil. Ignore that fluid and you’ll hear the warning: a rising whine under load, then a howl on decel.

Drain the oil and you’ll find metallic shavings. Sometimes chunks. I’ve opened a few that looked like they’d been sandblasted inside.

Most failures show up between 90,000–130,000 miles (145,000–209,000 km) when no one ever serviced the gear oil.

The early four-speed cars carry the most long-term wear exposure. The later FS5A-EL cars are smoother and tend to age better if serviced.
