Overview

The second-gen Dodge Durango is one of those SUVs that can look a lot worse on paper than it feels on the road, right up until the day the drivetrain decides it has had enough. I’ve seen that pattern more than once. Clean body, decent interior, strong tow rating, V8 sounds healthy, then you get underneath it or road test it hot and the whole story changes.

From 2004 through 2009, this platform used two Chrysler automatics, several transfer-case arrangements, and more than one rear axle setup. That matters. A lot. People talk about “Durango transmission problems” like it is one single failure pattern. It isn’t. Some trucks have a 42RLE issue. Some have a 545RFE with rough shift behavior that can be software-related, fluid-related, or hard-part wear. Some have no real transmission problem at all and the noise is coming from the transfer case, driveshaft, or rear axle.

And the federal record matters here. Early. Not buried halfway down the page where nobody sees it.

This generation has real drivetrain-related regulatory history. Three items deserve attention right away:

In my experience, the 545RFE is the better long-haul unit on this platform. I’ve seen dozens of them survive abuse that would have made a lighter-duty transmission give up early. The 42RLE can live too, but it has less cushion, less forgiveness, and more baggage tied to this generation. Then you layer in transfer-case wear, driveshaft clunk, axle noise, and bad maintenance habits. That is how these trucks get expensive.

So no, this is not a platform where every single Durango is a ticking time bomb. But some configurations absolutely deserve a harder look, and some are one bad inspection away from becoming a ridiculous repair bill.

Which Transmissions It Uses

The U.S.-market 2004–2009 Dodge Durango used two verified transmission model codes. That’s it. No manual. No CVT. No dual-clutch. No mystery “6-speed” variant that somebody on a marketplace ad made up.

42RLE

The 42RLE is the lighter-duty 4-speed automatic used in V6 applications on this platform. It is not a total junk box by default, but it is not the transmission I get excited to see in a heavy SUV either. In real service bays, once fluid condition slips, shift quality starts drifting, and owners ignore early symptoms, this unit can get messy fast.

Its biggest black eye on the Durango is not even classic internal wear. It is the recall history. Recall 05V460 covers certain 2005–2006 Durango vehicles equipped with the 42RLE because of a park-pawl anchor shaft retention problem. If the shaft moves, the truck may not stay in Park. That is not some nitpicky technicality. That is a rollaway risk.

Then there is Recall 06V341 / F43 on certain 2007 Durango models equipped with the 42RLE. This one is ugly in a different way. The powertrain control module software could allow the transmission to shift into first gear after a Drive-to-Neutral-to-Drive maneuver, even at speeds over 40 mph (64 km/h). Chrysler fixed it with a PCM reflash. Still, when a transmission’s worst day is tied to a software event that can momentarily lock the drive wheels, I pay attention.

545RFE

The 545RFE is the transmission most techs would rather deal with on this platform. It was used behind the 4.7L V8, the 5.7L HEMI V8, and some 3.7L V6 applications. Bigger unit. Better margin. Better reputation. Not perfect, but better.

I’ve seen high-mileage 545RFE units stay alive well past 150,000 Miles (241,000 km) when the fluid was kept clean and towing heat was not ignored. I’ve also seen them feel like they were lunching gears when the real problem was calibration, old ATF+4, converter shudder, or a driveline vibration getting blamed on the tranny. That happens all the time. Somebody feels a bump or shudder, panics, and decides the whole box is grenaded. Sometimes it is. A lot of times it isn’t.

For this generation, no verified alternative transmissions used.

Main Failure Patterns

This is where people usually want one neat answer. There isn’t one. The real failure picture breaks into three groups: confirmed recall defects, software and control behavior, and plain old wear from age, heat, towing, and neglect.

42RLE park-pawl retention defect

Recall 05V460 covers certain 2005–2006 Durango vehicles equipped with the 42RLE. The official defect was a cup plug retention issue involving the park pawl anchor shaft. Chrysler’s fix was to inspect the transmission and install a bracket to hold that shaft where it belongs.

If the vehicle will not stay securely in Park, do not brush that off as “old truck stuff.” I’ve seen people do that. Bad move. On an incline, this can become a rollaway event.

And the ugly part is that the rest of the transmission can seem fine. It can shift okay. It can drive okay. Then the Park function lies to you. Different kind of failure. Still serious.

42RLE shift-logic defect

Recall 06V341 / F43 is a separate problem, and it matters because it has nothing to do with normal wear. Certain 2007 Durango models equipped with the 42RLE and built through August 14, 2006 could allow a first-gear event after the selector moved from Drive to Neutral and back to Drive. At speeds above 40 mph (64 km/h), that could momentarily lock the drive wheels.

That is not a worn clutch pack. Not low fluid. Not a tired solenoid pack. It is a control issue, and Chrysler addressed it with PCM software.

This is why I always say recall history on these matters before the road test even starts. A missed flash can make you chase symptoms that should have been dead years ago.

545RFE rough shift, shudder, and calibration behavior

The 545RFE does not carry the same kind of recall baggage on this platform, but it does show real-world complaints that line up with factory bulletin history. FCA bulletin 18-093-15, which includes 2009 HB Durango, addresses a list of transmission-related conditions through software updates. That list includes revised torque-converter lockup scheduling to reduce transmission temperatures in Tow/Cruise mode, shudder or shaking during moderate or wide-open-throttle acceleration, harsh or noisy Neutral-to-Reverse shifts, harsh 4-3 downshifts, and harsh 1-2 upshifts.

That matters because owners often jump straight to “needs a rebuild” when they feel a shudder. In my experience, that is way too early sometimes. Sometimes the unit is worn out, sure. Sometimes the fluid is cooked and full of junk. Sometimes the converter is heading downhill. But I’ve also seen trucks act far worse than they really were because the calibration was old, the adaptation was off, or somebody had slapped on the wrong diagnostic guess before doing the basic checks.

You need to separate symptom from cause. Harsh 4-3 downshift. Converter shudder under load. Delayed engagement. Neutral-to-Reverse bang. Those are clues, not conclusions.

The factory side of the world tends to make people think modern automatic transmissions can just run forever if they still move the truck. In service bays, we know better. Heat kills fluid. On a heavy SUV used for towing, stop-and-go driving, hot-weather commuting, or short-trip use, waiting too long on service is a cheap decision that turns expensive later.

Transfer case wear

There is no broad federal campaign here saying every transfer case in the second-gen Durango is bad. That would be wrong. But on high-mileage trucks, transfer-case issues are common enough that I never ignore them.

What I see most often is wear, not some dramatic universal defect. Chain stretch. Clutch wear on full-time systems. Seal leaks. Noise under load. Binding complaints that the owner swears are transmission-related. Sometimes they are not even close.

FCA’s remedy was to install a pinion nut on affected vehicles, with extra axle service where damage had already started. So when I hear a 2009 owner describe rear-end growl, bind, or sudden driveline harshness, I am checking N08 history before I start daydreaming about internal tranny failure.

And yes, those numbers can jump. Fast. If the transmission has contaminated the cooler, if the converter is junk, if the transfer case has started eating itself, if the axle damage has gone past the simple fix stage, the repair bill climbs in a hurry.

If I’m looking at these as a buyer, the best year is not automatically the newest one. A 2009 with unresolved axle history is worse than a well-kept 2008. A rough 42RLE truck with missing recall work is worse than a serviced 545RFE truck with records. A lot of this comes down to paperwork, condition, and whether the drivetrain has been maintained by somebody who understood what they were looking at.

In my experience, the 545RFE-equipped trucks are usually the safer play if the rest of the driveline checks out. The 42RLE units make me slower, more suspicious, and a lot less willing to give the seller the benefit of the doubt.

I want to test these trucks cold and hot. Every time. Cold start engagement tells one story. Hot soak tells another. Road-speed vibration tells another. Coast-down shift feel. Reverse engagement. Moderate throttle. Wide-open throttle. Tight turn bind. If the seller only wants you to drive around the block for five minutes, there is usually a reason.

And listen to the language owners use. “It just has a little shudder.” “It only clunks once in a while.” “The four-wheel-drive thing acts weird sometimes.” That kind of phrasing usually means the issue is old, recurring, and already normalized in their head.

When to Walk Away

Some trucks are worth sorting out. Some are not.

A truck can have low mileage and still be rough underneath because it sat, got little use, or got neglected by three owners in a row. Low miles is not a magic shield.

There is also the broader NHTSA investigative trail around the Chrysler 9.25 rear axle. PE14-019 identified 2004–2008 HB Durango vehicles equipped with that axle as peer vehicles in the pinion-nut investigation record. That does not mean every 2004–2008 truck got recalled. It means the issue was studied in a wider Chrysler truck context and the axle story was bigger than one isolated model-year complaint.

The 42RLE deserves extra caution. Two separate NHTSA recalls tied to Park retention and shift logic is not light baggage. The 545RFE is usually the better bet and, in my experience, the tougher unit long-term, but it still needs the basics: correct fluid, good calibration status, smart diagnosis, and a driveline inspection that rules out shaft, transfer-case, and axle issues before somebody condemns the whole tranny.

The 2009 axle defect is real. Serious too. If that recall history is missing, stop there and verify it before doing anything else.

So what is the ownership reality? Simple. A clean, correctly serviced Durango from this generation can still work. A neglected one can eat money in layers. You fix the shudder, then the clunk shows up. You fix the clunk, then the axle starts singing. You reseal the transfer case, then the converter starts acting up. That is how old drivetrain problems stack.

If I were advising a buyer, I would want recall proof, service records, a hot and cold road test, scan data, fluid condition, and a lift inspection. No shortcuts. No seller folklore. No “probably fine.”

Do that, and this platform becomes manageable. Skip it, and you may end up buying somebody else’s band-aid fix in 2026.
