Hyundai-Kia A8LF1 8-Speed

Hyundai-Kia A8LF1 8-Speed Automatic Transmission: Reliability and Failure Analysis

Introduction

The Hyundai-Kia A8LF1 is a transverse 8-speed torque-converter automatic transaxle used in selected front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive applications. Verified A8LF1 documentation identifies an eight-forward-speed layout with three planetary gearsets, four driving clutch packs, two brake packs, electronically controlled hydraulic operation, and a multi-solenoid valve body.

The unit is important to identify by transmission code rather than vehicle model alone. Hyundai and Kia service publications often group several 8-speed automatic transmissions together, and a bulletin that lists a vehicle does not necessarily prove that every engine, drivetrain, model year, or build configuration used the A8LF1.

Technical Specifications & Identification

The most complete exact-variant specification set available for the A8LF1 comes from Hyundai Palisade service documentation. In the Palisade 3.8 application, the service information explicitly identifies the transmission as A8LF1 and provides the following ratios.

Gear Ratio
1st 4.808
2nd 2.901
3rd 1.864
4th 1.424
5th 1.219
6th 1.000
7th 0.799
8th 0.648
Reverse 3.425

The same Palisade material lists a 3.510 final drive for the 2WD configuration and 3.648 for the 4WD configuration. These values should be treated as application-specific rather than universal A8LF1 specifications.

An official OEM torque rating tied explicitly to the A8LF1 designation has not been established in the available documentation. Hyundai Transys publishes an A8F36 transmission with specifications that resemble the A8LF1 application data, but the available primary material does not establish that A8F36 and A8LF1 are interchangeable designations. The A8F36 torque figure therefore should not be assigned automatically to the A8LF1.

Identification Warning

Do not identify an A8LF1 from vehicle model or an A8F36 specification sheet alone. Hyundai and Kia use multiple 8-speed automatic variants, and family-level service bulletins may cover more than one transmission. Confirm the transmission code for the exact model year, engine and drivetrain before ordering parts or applying specifications.

Vehicle Applications & Platform Coverage

Application evidence varies in strength. Some vehicles have documentation that explicitly identifies A8LF1, while others are confirmed only as having an 8-speed automatic in the available OEM bulletin.

Vehicle Verified Scope Engine A8LF1 Identification
Hyundai Sonata LFa 2018–2019 2.0L Theta II T-GDI Service-manual material identifies transmission code LA as A8LF1; Hyundai bulletin evidence separately confirms the 8-speed application.
Hyundai Palisade LX2 2020+ service-bulletin coverage 3.8L GDI Strong exact-variant evidence. Hyundai service campaign material directly references the Palisade A8LF1 shop-manual section.
Kia Telluride ON 2020 MY confirmed in OEM bulletin material 3.8L GDI Kia confirms the 8-speed automatic. Exact A8LF1 designation is supported by secondary/manual material but was not independently established in the Tier 1 bulletin reviewed.

The Palisade application is the strongest exact-variant reference among the later vehicles because Hyundai campaign documentation explicitly directs technicians to the Automatic Transaxle System (A8LF1) section. A website or service-manual package covering later Palisade model years should not by itself be treated as proof that every listed model year used the same exact transmission variant.

Mechanical Architecture

ATRA technical material and Palisade service documentation describe the A8LF1 as a compact electronically controlled 8-speed transaxle using three planetary gearsets, four driving clutch packs and two brake packs. No conventional transmission bands are established in the available exact-variant material.

The hydraulic control system uses a valve body with electronically controlled solenoids. ATRA identifies seven variable-force solenoids and one ON/OFF solenoid. Palisade service data separates the system into five direct-control VFS solenoids, two indirect-control VFS solenoids and one ON/OFF solenoid.

Control Element Function / Identification
Direct-control VFS 28/B, 46/C, 37R/C, UD/C, OD/C & LR/B
Indirect-control VFS T/CON and LINE
ON/OFF solenoid SS-A
Speed sensing Input-shaft, middle and output-shaft Hall-effect sensors
Temperature sensing Transmission oil temperature sensor

The torque converter uses a three-path hydraulic arrangement with converter-in, converter-out and a dedicated damper/TCC-apply path. ATRA teardown material also identifies the lock-up clutch drum, hub sealing arrangement and damper springs within the converter assembly.

Valve Body & Hydraulic Control

The A8LF1 valve body distributes pump pressure to the clutch and brake circuits under electronic control. The available technical documentation supports the solenoid architecture and hydraulic control layout, but it does not establish a recurring A8LF1-specific valve-bore wear pattern, separator-plate defect or regulator-bore failure that can responsibly be described as a known weakness.

This distinction matters because solenoid-related trouble codes do not automatically identify the failed part. Hyundai’s service procedure requires technicians to check external wiring before replacing the corresponding solenoid and the internal valve-body harness. A diagnostic code naming a solenoid circuit therefore establishes a diagnostic area, not proof that the solenoid itself has mechanically failed.

OEM Documented · Hyundai TSB 23-AT-003H

For specified 8-speed automatic-transmission solenoid DTCs, Hyundai instructs technicians to inspect wiring first. When the circuit checks support internal transmission repair, the relevant solenoid and valve-body harness are replaced, followed by the required oil-pressure characteristic input procedure.

Hydraulic calibration is also service-critical. Kia technical information for the GEN2 automatic-transmission system, including A8LF1 within its stated scope, explains that manufacturing tolerances produce different pressure characteristics between transmissions and solenoids. Stored characteristic data therefore needs to be handled correctly after specified control-unit or transmission work.

Failure Analysis

The strongest evidence for A8LF1-related problems comes from OEM diagnostic bulletins and campaigns. These sources establish specific service conditions and repair paths, but they do not provide a verified statistical failure rate or a universal mileage at which the transmission should be expected to fail.

Failure / Condition Symptoms Supported Cause or Diagnostic Finding Affected Scope OEM Repair Path
Solenoid / internal electrical fault MIL, shift malfunction, solenoid-related DTCs Solenoid circuit or internal harness condition after external wiring checks Hyundai 8-speed applications including Palisade 3.8 Diagnose wiring, then replace the applicable solenoid and valve-body harness when specified; perform characteristic input
P074100 torque-converter clutch condition MIL, TCC-related fault; possible lock-up performance problem OEM diagnostic condition; bulletin does not establish one universal physical root cause Hyundai 8-speed applications covered by TSB 23-AT-003H Follow TC-solenoid/harness diagnostic path; transmission replacement may be instructed if P074100 returns after the specified repair

Solenoid Codes Are Not Automatic Proof of Solenoid Failure

Hyundai TSB 23-AT-003H covers several transmission-control DTCs and gives a structured repair path. The important diagnostic point is that the transmission should not be condemned solely because the code description contains the word “solenoid.” External wiring is checked first. Only after the electrical diagnosis supports an internal fault does the procedure move to the corresponding solenoid and internal harness.

Diagnostic Path

Symptom
MIL, shift complaint, solenoid-related transmission DTC
Possible System
External wiring, valve-body harness or corresponding control solenoid
Verify
Follow the OEM circuit checks before replacing internal transmission components

P0741: Software, Control and Mechanical Repair Paths Must Be Separated

P0741/P074100 deserves particular care because the same code can appear in service information with different repair implications. Hyundai’s 8-speed diagnostic bulletin uses a torque-converter solenoid and harness path and can ultimately call for transmission replacement if the code returns. Kia’s Telluride TRA089 procedure, by contrast, addresses a damper-clutch engagement condition with a TCM logic update for a defined production range.

The presence of P0741 alone therefore does not justify assuming that the converter clutch is mechanically worn out. Vehicle, build date, software status and the applicable OEM bulletin should be established before deciding whether the repair is programming, valve-body/solenoid work or complete transmission replacement.

Incorrect-Ratio Codes and Clutch Slip

Hyundai TSB 24-AT-002H links the applicable incorrect-ratio DTCs to clutch slip exceeding the diagnostic threshold. That establishes that the transmission is failing to maintain the expected mechanical ratio under the commanded operating condition. It does not identify a specific worn clutch pack, valve-body bore or hydraulic leak as the universal cause.

This matters during diagnosis because a gear-ratio code is evidence of a transmission performance problem, but the code by itself should not be converted into a component-level failure diagnosis that the OEM bulletin does not make.

Hyundai also lists transmission-range / position-switch DTCs including P070500, P070512, P070514, P07051C, P070600, P070661 and P070696 in Palisade-related 8-speed service information. Those codes should be diagnosed as range-position and alignment/circuit faults rather than assumed to indicate internal clutch or geartrain damage.

Technical Service Bulletins & Service Programs

TSB / Program Issue Repair Affected Scope
Hyundai 23-AT-003H Solenoid and TCC-related DTCs Wiring diagnosis, applicable solenoid and valve-body harness replacement, calibration input; further repair where specified Several Hyundai 8-speed applications including Palisade 3.8
Hyundai 24-AT-002H Incorrect-ratio DTCs / clutch slip Diagnostic checks followed by transmission replacement when bulletin criteria are met Specified Hyundai FWD 8-speed applications
Hyundai 22-01-011H / T7U Metallic D-to-R / R-to-D noise Inspect drive plate; replace drive plate and specified bolts if contact is found Certain 2022 Palisade 3.8 vehicles built Sep. 16–Oct. 7, 2021
Kia TRA089 Rev.1 P074100 / TCC damper clutch does not engage TCM logic update Specified 2020 Telluride production
Kia TRA090 / SA428 Low-rpm noise / vibration Replace automatic transmission / torque-converter assembly 19 specified 2020 Telluride VINs built May 18–20, 2020

These documents are particularly useful when evaluating a transmission that has already been repaired. A software update, solenoid repair or complete transmission replacement can each be legitimate OEM-directed responses, but only within the specific bulletin scope. A repair invoice should therefore be checked for the original DTC, vehicle build date, bulletin number and any required post-repair calibration.

Safety Recall: Electric Oil Pump Controller

NHTSA recall 23V-526 / Hyundai Recall 246 covers an electric-oil-pump controller condition on certain 2023–2024 Palisade vehicles. Hyundai identified manufacturing damage to controller electrical components, including the PCB/capacitor area, that could allow overheating and create a fire risk.

The issue concerns the transmission’s auxiliary electric oil-pump controller used with the ISG system. It should not be described as evidence of internal A8LF1 geartrain, clutch or valve-body wear.

NHTSA Safety Recall · 23V-526

The recall covers specified Palisade vehicles and addresses the electric transmission oil-pump controller. Hyundai’s remedy procedure calls for inspection and replacement where required. Recall eligibility should be checked by VIN rather than assumed from model year alone.

Fluid & Service

Fluid specifications and capacities must remain application-specific. For the documented Palisade 3.8 A8LF1 application, service information lists approximately 7.0 liters total fluid quantity and identifies SP-IV or SP4M-1 in the service-manual specification material. Hyundai 8-speed repair procedures also specify SP4-M ATF in relevant service operations.

The Palisade drain-and-refill procedure begins with approximately 5 liters and then requires a proper level-setting procedure rather than treating the initial refill quantity as the final level.

Palisade A8LF1 Service Item Verified Value / Procedure
Approximate total ATF quantity 7.0 L / 7.40 US qt
Initial drain/refill quantity Approximately 5 L, followed by level setting
Level-check temperature 50–60°C / 122–140°F
Vehicle condition Vehicle level, engine idling
Selector procedure Cycle P → D → P, pausing more than 2 seconds at each position
Correct level indication Thin steady stream from the level-check port

Service Warning

Do not convert the Palisade capacity, fluid schedule or level procedure into universal A8LF1 service data. Fluid quantity and maintenance requirements can vary by vehicle, model year and market.

Maintenance Interval

For the Palisade service information reviewed, normal-use maintenance does not establish a routine ATF replacement interval, while the severe-use schedule specifies approximately 60,000 miles / 100,000 km. That figure belongs to the applicable Palisade maintenance schedule and should not be advertised as a universal A8LF1 fluid-change interval.

Calibration and Relearn After Repair

Calibration is part of the repair process on this transmission family. Hyundai’s solenoid procedure requires oil-pressure characteristic input after specified solenoid replacement. ATSG also describes oil-pressure characteristic relearn requirements after work such as TCM replacement, software updates, transmission replacement or valve-body/solenoid replacement.

A vehicle that has recently had transmission control work should therefore be evaluated with its programming and calibration history in mind. A poor post-repair shift complaint does not automatically prove that the replacement transmission or valve body is mechanically defective if the required calibration procedure was omitted or incomplete.

Used-Vehicle Inspection

There is no verified mileage threshold at which an A8LF1 should be expected to fail, so mileage alone is a weak screening tool. A more useful inspection focuses on repeatable symptoms, stored codes, repair history and whether applicable campaigns or software procedures were completed correctly.

  • Scan the transmission control system. P0741/P074100, solenoid-circuit codes and incorrect-ratio codes have different diagnostic implications and should not be grouped together as generic “transmission failure.”
  • Check engagement and ratio stability. Repeated engine-speed flare without matching vehicle acceleration, persistent loss of a gear or an incorrect-ratio DTC deserves diagnosis.
  • Listen during D-to-R and R-to-D changes. On an affected 2022 Palisade, metallic noise can be related to the documented drive-plate/bolt service campaign rather than an internal planetary or clutch failure.
  • Verify software history. A 2020 Telluride within the applicable production range may have a P0741-related TCM logic update.
  • Review previous transmission repairs. Solenoid replacement, complete transmission replacement or TCM programming should be matched to the bulletin and followed by the required calibration procedure.
  • Check recall status by VIN. Relevant Palisade vehicles should be checked for Recall 246 / NHTSA 23V-526.
  • Confirm the exact transmission code before purchasing parts. Similar Hyundai-Kia 8-speed units should not be assumed to share every internal component, specification or diagnostic procedure.

Engineering Verdict

The A8LF1 is a conventional electronically controlled 8-speed automatic with a relatively dense hydraulic and electronic control system: three planetary gearsets, six friction elements, eight control solenoids and a multi-path torque-converter clutch circuit. The available technical evidence provides useful OEM diagnostic and service guidance but does not support assigning the unit a universal failure mileage, a numerical failure rate or a single recurring internal mechanical defect.

The most important documented service issues are narrower and application-dependent: solenoid and internal-harness diagnostic conditions, P0741/TCC control cases, incorrect-ratio/clutch-slip diagnostics, the limited Palisade drive-plate campaign, the Telluride software and service-action cases, and the Palisade electric-oil-pump-controller recall.

For diagnosis, the transmission code and bulletin scope matter as much as the symptom. A P0741 condition may lead to programming in one application and a solenoid/transmission diagnostic path in another. An incorrect-ratio code confirms a ratio-control problem but does not identify a particular failed clutch without further evidence. A solenoid code identifies a circuit and control area, not automatically a failed solenoid.

For servicing, fluid specification, quantity and maintenance interval should be taken from the exact vehicle application rather than generalized across every A8LF1 installation. After relevant control-system or hydraulic repairs, the required characteristic input or relearn procedure is part of completing the job correctly.
