The RE0F11A CVT is the main act. If you’re looking at an automatic Sentra from this generation, that’s what you’re getting. No alternative automatics. No secret stronger unit hiding in higher trims.
The 6-speed manual exists. Rare. Simple. Much less drama.
The CVT integrates the differential. That means when the tranny sheds metal, the differential eats it too. Everything shares the same fluid. That design choice matters later.
Main Failure Patterns
Variator Belt and Pulley Wear
This is the big one.
The steel push belt rides between adjustable pulleys. Over time — heat, load, fluid breakdown — the belt starts to polish the pulley faces. Then it slips. Then it shudders. Then it gets ugly.
I usually see the first real drivability complaints between 70,000 and 120,000 miles (113,000–193,000 km). Sometimes sooner in hot climates. Arizona cars age faster. Florida too. Sustained heat over 95°F (35°C), highway cruising, stop-and-go, cheap fluid services — it all stacks up.
