The RFE transmissions (545RFE and 65RFE) are classic Chrysler gearboxes. Big. Hydraulic. Simple logic. They don’t panic when a sensor hiccups.

The Mercedes-derived W5A580 sits somewhere in between. Solid unit. A little old by modern standards but pretty durable.

The real change came in 2014 when Jeep moved to ZF’s eight-speed design. The 845RE and 8HP70.

These shift beautifully when everything is dialed in.

When it isn’t? That’s when customers start hearing the phrase “software update” a lot.

Main Failure Patterns

Electronic Shifter Rollaway Recall

This one made national headlines.

2014–2015 Grand Cherokees with the eight-speed transmissions used a monostable electronic shifter. The lever didn’t stay in position like a normal gear selector. You moved it, it sprang back to center.

Drivers hated it.

More importantly, people thought the vehicle was in PARK when it wasn’t.

The result was federal recall S27 (NHTSA campaign 16V-240). Vehicles could roll away if the driver exited while the engine was running and the parking brake wasn’t set.

The repair involved software changes and updates to the shift interface system.

The biggest regulatory issue for the WK2 drivetrain was recall S27 (NHTSA 16V-240).

The electronic shifter design confused drivers and led to rollaway incidents. That recall triggered a federal investigation before the fix was issued.
