Jeep Grand Cherokee gen 3 2005–2010 Transmission Reliability Under Real Ownership
Overview
The 2005–2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK sits in an interesting place in Jeep history. Not old-school mechanical like the earlier models, not yet the hyper-electronic SUV you see today. Somewhere in the middle. That middle ground created some solid drivetrains… and a few messy ones.
From a transmission standpoint the platform used two main automatics in the U.S. market: the W5A580 and the 545RFE. Both were already around for a while when this Jeep showed up, which usually means bugs were ironed out. Usually.
The bigger headaches on this platform actually come from the transfer case electronics and a couple of early production issues that Chrysler had to fix after vehicles were already on the road.
Two regulatory items matter immediately if you own—or are about to buy—one of these.
First is NHTSA Recall 05V-396 (Chrysler Campaign E13). This one affected certain 2005 models with the 3.7L V6. The transmission fill tube oil seal allowed water into the transmission fluid. Water and ATF do not get along. The contaminated fluid caused torque converter shudder and rising transmission temps. Chrysler’s fix was to replace the seal, install a water shield, and inspect the tranny for damage.
The second big one is NHTSA Recall 13V-175 (Chrysler Campaign N23). This involves the electronically controlled transfer cases used with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II. A position sensor inside the transfer case actuator could fail. When that happens, the transfer case can lose track of where it is and drop into neutral. While driving. Not fun.
The recall fix was a software update to the Final Drive Control Module plus actuator replacement if it failed testing. Anyone buying one of these today should run the VIN through NHTSA or a Jeep dealer system. Takes two minutes. Worth it.
Which Transmissions It Uses
W5A580
This is the Mercedes-based unit derived from the 722.6 gearbox. Jeep used it in several vehicles during the DaimlerChrysler era. It’s a five-speed automatic with solid torque capacity and pretty durable internals when the fluid stays clean.
In the shop we usually call it the “Mercedes box.” Most techs know it well.

These units can rack up big mileage. I’ve seen them well past 200,000 miles with nothing but fluid changes. But once contamination or overheating happens, the failure gets messy fast. Clutch packs shed material. Metal shavings show up in the pan. At that point the rebuild bill arrives.
545RFE
The other transmission in the WK lineup is Chrysler’s truck gearbox, the 545RFE. A five-speed automatic built from the RFE family used in Ram trucks and other heavy SUVs.
It’s not a delicate transmission. Internally it’s actually pretty tough. Planetaries are strong. Clutch packs are generous. But the hydraulic design has quirks.

It uses two filters. A main pan filter and a cooler return filter. A lot of owners never know the second one exists. That detail becomes important later.
No other verified transmissions were used in the U.S. WK Grand Cherokee between 2005 and 2010.
Main Failure Patterns
Delayed Engagement – 545RFE
This one shows up in the service lane all the time. Customer backs out of the driveway in the morning… puts the shifter in drive… nothing happens. For a couple seconds it feels like the Jeep is in neutral.
Then it grabs. Hard.
Chrysler actually addressed this in TSB 21-016-05. The issue is fluid draining out of internal hydraulic circuits while the vehicle sits. When the engine starts the pump has to refill those circuits before the transmission can apply the clutches.
A restricted cooler return filter can make the delay worse. Replacing that filter often fixes the problem if the tranny hasn’t been abused.
Mileage range where I usually see it: Service Bay Benchmark — 80,000 to 140,000 miles.
NV245 Transfer Case Encoder Failure
Now we get to the weird part of the WK drivetrain.
The NV245 transfer case used with Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II is electronically controlled. That means sensors, motors, and a control module deciding what the transfer case should be doing.
When the actuator encoder fails the system loses track of the transfer case position. That’s the issue behind recall N23.
Symptoms can be dramatic:
- Service 4WD warning light
- Vehicle suddenly losing drive
- Transfer case stuck in a range
- Diagnostic codes stored in the Final Drive Control Module
In real service bays I’ve seen these start showing up around 90k miles. Some last longer. Some fail earlier. Electronics age in strange ways.
Water Contamination in Early 3.7L Models
The early 2005 models had a strange design problem. The transmission fill tube seal could let water run down into the transmission. That triggered recall 05V-396.
When water mixes with automatic transmission fluid it destroys the friction characteristics of the clutch material. The torque converter clutch starts chattering. The shifts get erratic. The whole unit starts running hotter.
I’ve opened transmissions where this happened. The clutch material looked cooked and the fluid smelled burnt. Not a good situation.

Transfer Case Module Software Problems
A few bulletins were issued for the Final Drive Control Module as well. One of the more common ones is TSB 21-022-14. Another update came through Chrysler’s P73 customer satisfaction program.
Both deal with software glitches that trigger the Service 4WD lamp or prevent the transfer case from shifting modes.
Sometimes a simple reflash solves it. Other times the actuator itself is already worn out and needs replacement.

Transfer case actuators are the repair I see most often on these. They just wear out. Small electric motor, sensor inside, a lot of heat and vibration. Eventually they quit.

Warning Signs & Early Detection
If you’re inspecting one of these Jeeps, watch the drivetrain closely.
- Delayed engagement when shifting into drive
- Torque converter shudder at highway speeds
- Service 4WD light on the dash
- Transfer case refusing to change modes
- Dirty or burnt transmission fluid
In my experience the smartest pre-purchase inspection includes a scan of both the transmission control module and the Final Drive Control Module. Those computers store history codes long before something fails completely.
When to Walk Away
Sometimes the Jeep is telling you something.
A transfer case stuck in neutral. Transmission slipping. Burnt fluid smell. Those are warning signs you don’t ignore.
If a WK shows multiple drivetrain problems at once the repair bill can climb past $5,000 quickly. At that point the vehicle turns into a project instead of transportation.
Ownership Reality
Manufacturer maintenance schedules and real-world service experience are rarely the same thing. These Jeeps are no exception.

Most independent shops I know recommend servicing the transmission every 60,000 miles. Fluid and filters. Cheap insurance.
Lawsuits, Complaints & Regulatory History
NHTSA complaint data for the WK platform includes clusters of reports about transfer cases dropping into neutral while driving. Those complaints helped trigger the investigation that eventually produced recall 13V-175.
The pattern mainly involved vehicles equipped with NV245 transfer cases used in Quadra-Trac II and Quadra-Drive II systems.
Large class-action lawsuits targeting the WK transmission itself have not been widely documented in regulatory filings. The majority of official actions focused on transfer case electronics and the early transmission seal problem.
Bottom Line
The transmissions used in the 2005–2010 Grand Cherokee are generally solid units. The W5A580 especially can last a very long time when serviced correctly.
Most of the real headaches on this platform come from the transfer case electronics rather than the transmissions themselves.
A well-maintained example can easily run past 200,000 miles. I’ve seen plenty of them do it. Skip maintenance, ignore warning lights, or buy one with unresolved recall issues… and the drivetrain can turn into a ticking time bomb.
