Overview
The second-generation Jeep Compass showed up for the 2017 model year on the MP platform. Same name. Totally different guts compared with the older Compass. And from a transmission standpoint… things got complicated.
I’ve worked on a lot of these. Dealership years. Independent shop years. The pattern is pretty consistent.
The majority of U.S. Compass models run the ZF-based nine-speed transaxle family. That means the 9HP48 and the FCA-coded 948TE variants. Add a front power transfer unit for AWD models and a clutch-controlled rear drive module. On paper it’s clever. In the shop it can be… temperamental.
Before we even talk shift behavior, there’s one driveline issue owners absolutely need to know about. The early 2017 production run had a federal safety recall tied directly to the drivetrain.
NHTSA Recall 17V-301, also called FCA Safety Recall T26, involved certain 2017 Jeep Compass vehicles equipped with the F21-250 six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive.
The problem wasn’t subtle. The left front axle shaft could be installed incorrectly at the factory. If the circlip didn’t seat fully inside the differential side gear, the shaft could slide out under load.
When that happens the driver hears grinding, then a loud pop, and the vehicle suddenly loses drive. Transmission goes into chaos because the differential isn’t transferring torque anymore. I’ve seen one of these roll in on a tow truck with the axle halfway out of the case.
The recall covered vehicles built between October 27, 2016 and April 7, 2017. Dealers inspected axle engagement and replaced the shaft when necessary.
It wasn’t a massive recall population, but the failure itself was serious. Loss of propulsion is never a small thing.
Outside that recall, most Compass drivetrain complaints aren’t catastrophic failures. They’re calibration quirks, software updates, and the occasional fluid seep. Annoying. Sometimes expensive. Rarely a completely grenaded tranny.

Most AWD Compass models run a fairly typical modern setup.

During steady cruising the system disconnects the rear axle to save fuel. Sounds great in engineering meetings. In the real world, more parts means more possible noise sources and wear points.
Main Failure Patterns
Weird Shifting From The 9HP48
The ZF nine-speed was ambitious. Nine ratios packed into a small case. Dog clutches. Nested gearsets. Very compact.
And early on it behaved… weird.
Owners describe hesitation leaving stoplights, odd gear hunting around 25 mph (40 km/h), rev flare during shifts, and sometimes a momentary neutral feel.
I’ve seen dozens of these come in with the exact same complaint: “It feels confused.”
Most of the time the tranny isn’t broken. The calibration is.

Transmission Case Seepage
A smaller issue but it shows up occasionally.
Some vehicles equipped with the 948TE variant develop fluid seepage along the case split seam. Not a blown seal. More like a slow oily film creeping along the case.
The factory service procedure is simple: check bolt torque along the case seam and retorque to spec.
Messy leak? Rare.
Slow seep? I’ve seen it.
Front Axle Disengagement (Recall T26)
The early driveline recall deserves another mention because the failure mode was ugly.
If the axle wasn’t fully seated during assembly, the circlip wouldn’t lock into the differential. Under torque load the shaft could slide out.
Driver hears grinding. Then a pop.
No drive.
That’s not a slipping clutch. That’s the driveline physically disconnecting.
TCM Electrical Fault Codes
Some newer vehicles with the 8F30 transmission show diagnostic codes related to TCM power input circuits.
These tend to be electrical faults rather than internal transmission damage.

Transmission problems rarely start with a bang.
They start with small hints.

Modern vehicles store fault codes even when the dash light turns off. A proper diagnostic scan can reveal a lot about the health of the drivetrain.

Buying used?
Pay attention during the test drive.

Manufacturers call transmission fluid “lifetime.”
In the shop we laugh at that.
