Most trucks you’ll see today run the 42RE behind the 4.0L inline-six. That combo sold in huge numbers. The V8 models step up to the bigger TorqueFlite units — basically truck transmissions with slightly modernized control.

42RE / 44RE Governor Pressure Sensor and Solenoid
Now we get into the electronic side.
The RE-series transmissions use a governor pressure sensor and solenoid mounted in the valve body. The TCM uses that pressure reading to control shift timing.
When the sensor gets tired, things go sideways.
