The 2011–2016 Hyundai Equus is one of those cars people forget about until one rolls into the shop with a transmission light on and 110,000 miles on the clock.

Main Failure Patterns
A8TR1 Solenoid & E-Module Issues
I’ve seen dozens of these come in with the same story: check engine light, shifts feel off, owner says “it just started acting weird.”
Scan it and you’ll usually find one or more of these:
- P0741 – Torque Converter Clutch Performance
- P0743 – Torque Converter Clutch Electrical
- P0748 – Pressure Control Solenoid A
- P0753 / P0758 – Shift Solenoid A/B Electrical

Hyundai issued TSB 19-AT-008H and earlier bulletins telling techs very clearly: do not replace the whole transmission for these codes. Replace the affected solenoids. Replace the E-module if needed. Check the harness. Reflash if applicable.
That’s good guidance. I agree with it.
In real service bays, these faults usually start showing up between 70,000 and 130,000 miles (113,000–209,000 km). That’s not a factory statement. That’s field reality. Heat and fluid age play a role. Southern states where fluid temps sit above 220°F (104°C) in traffic? Those cars show up earlier.
Most of the time it’s electrical control — not a grenaded geartrain. That distinction matters when you’re looking at a $1,800 repair versus a $6,000 nightmare.
Torque Converter Clutch Wear
P0741 can be a wiring issue. Or calibration. Or it can be the converter starting to get tired.
Once these cross 100,000 miles (160,000 km), I start watching for shudder under light throttle when the converter locks. Feels like you’re driving over tiny rumble strips. That’s clutch material wearing and slipping.
Keep driving it like that and you get heat. Heat turns fluid dark. Dark fluid carries shavings. Shavings chew up valve bodies. Then the repair gets messy.

P0841 Pressure Sensor Behavior

Adaptive Learning Problems
Bulletin 16-AT-001-2 covers adaptive reset and relearn after PCM or TCM work. This is where shops mess up.
They fix the hardware. They forget the relearn. Customer picks up the car and says it shifts worse than before.
2–3 flare. Harsh 4–3 downshift. Inconsistent engagement.
It’s not broken. It’s confused.
You reset the adaptives. You perform the relearn drive cycle correctly. Problem gone.

ZF 6HP26 – 2011 Only
The 2011 model is different. ZF 6HP26. Old-school European feel.
No Equus-specific TSB storm. No widespread DTC cluster. What I see on these is standard 6HP26 behavior after 120,000 miles (193,000 km):
- Mechatronic sealing sleeve leaks
- Valve body wear
- TCC wear
Fluid neglected? It’ll start lunching gears on downshift. Keep ignoring it and you’re pricing out a rebuild.

The A8TR1 takes roughly 9–10 Quarts (8.5–9.5 Liters) for a full exchange depending on method. It uses Hyundai SP-IV-RR fluid. Put the wrong stuff in it and you’ll get strange shift timing. I’ve seen cheap shops slap universal fluid in and create problems that weren’t there before.

The early A8TR1 years show more code clustering in service records. Later ones feel more stable. The 2011 ZF car is different hardware entirely, so comparisons aren’t apples to apples.
Warning Signs & Early Detection
- Stored transmission DTCs even with no active warning light
- Delayed engagement when shifting into Drive
- RPM flare between gears
- Light throttle shudder during converter lockup
- Burnt-smelling fluid
I always tell buyers: scan it. Don’t trust the dash. Pending codes hide there waiting.
When to Walk Away
- Repeated transmission repairs with no clear root cause
- Active P0741 or P0841 after prior “repairs”

Always run the VIN through NHTSA’s lookup. Always request dealer service history. If TSB work was done, that’s a good sign. If it was ignored, expect to deal with it.

The 2011 ZF 6HP26 behaves like every other 6HP26. Maintain it and it lasts. Neglect it and it gets expensive.
The 2012–2016 A8TR1 has documented solenoid and control module patterns. Annoying? Yes. Catastrophic? Rare.
Most of the financial risk sits in the $1,500–$3,000 repair range, not $7,000 disasters. Unless someone drove it with shudder and shavings floating around for 40,000 miles.
Buy one with records. Service it early. Don’t believe in lifetime fluid myths.
