Overview

The sixth-gen Ford Explorer showed up for 2020 and Ford didn’t tiptoe into it. New rear-wheel-drive–based platform. New 10-speed tranny family. New rear suspension and axle layout. Big swing.

In the bay, big swings come with consequences.

I’ve had a steady stream of these Explorers on my lift since they were new. Same complaints. Same smells. Same conversations with owners who were told “they all do that.” Some do. Some absolutely shouldn’t.

Right up front, there’s one thing nobody should gloss over.

Recall 23V-675 (Ford program 23S55). Applies to 2020–2022 Explorers. Rear axle horizontal mounting bolt. It can fatigue and snap. When it does, the axle can shift enough to mess with the driveshaft and park system. Loss of drive. Rollaway risk. This wasn’t internet noise — NHTSA opened investigation RQ23002 and forced the recall.

VIN check is mandatory. Ford OASIS or NHTSA lookup. No excuses.

Ford also stacked on Customer Satisfaction Program 22N06, stretching coverage on that axle bolt to 10 years / 150,000 miles (241,000 km) for some builds. That tells you plenty about how confident they felt the first time around.

No secret alternates. No late-year swaps. Gas trucks get the 10R60. Hybrids get the 10R80 MHT with the motor baked into the case. That’s the lineup.

Main Control Valve Body – The Usual Suspect

If you’ve driven one that bangs into gear cold, hesitates leaving Park, or shifts like it’s annoyed with you — you’re already familiar.

This is valve body territory.

Ford dressed it up with software stories and adaptive learning routines. Sometimes that helps. I’ve seen it smooth out a few. Plenty more came back. Same complaint. Same shudder. Same customer eye-roll.

This one’s worse.

You’re cruising. Light throttle. Then nothing. Engine revs. No pull. Half a second later it’s back.

Ford traced this to a hydraulic leak in the park valve circuit. It shows up mostly on 2020 and early-build 2021 units. The fix is a revised separator plate. Band-aid? No. It actually addresses the leak path.

I’ve seen it scare the hell out of owners in traffic. Rightfully so.

Hybrid “Leaks” That Aren’t

The hybrid trucks get their own flavor of confusion.

Fresh delivery. Under 100 miles (160 km). Fluid dampness around the hybrid motor joint. Tech writes it up as a transmission leak. Panic.

Ford’s guidance is clear. Residual assembly fluid. Clean it. Warm it up. Recheck. Most of the time it stays dry.

I’ve also seen people yank trannies for no reason. That’s on the diagnosis, not the hardware.

Rear Axle Bolt Failure – Real Consequences

This one isn’t annoying. It’s dangerous.

The Explorer’s rear axle is hung on a three-point setup. One horizontal bolt takes a lot of load. On affected builds, that bolt can fatigue and break.

When it does, the axle moves. Driveshaft angles go weird. Park torque drops. I’ve seen one where the shaft was barely hanging on.

The recall fix adds revised hardware and a new rear differential subframe bushing to calm the stress. If this recall isn’t done, the vehicle isn’t “mostly fine.” It’s a ticking time bomb.

  • Transmission replaced once with no paper trail explaining why? Walk faster.
