Main Failure Patterns

Torque Converter Overheating and Shudder

This one shows up again. And again. And again.

The 6F35 behind the 2.3L EcoBoost loves to cook its torque converter. Ford eventually put it in writing with TSB 20-2271, but long before that, techs already knew the feel. You don’t need a scan tool. Your spine tells you.

  • Light throttle. Steady speed.
  • Shudder like you’re driving over rumble strips.
  • Rough idle in Drive.
  • Lazy takeoff, like the thing’s half asleep.

What’s happening is simple and ugly. Heat kills the converter clutch. The friction material sheds. Shavings go everywhere. Valve body. Solenoids. Passages. Once that junk is floating around, the tranny starts eating itself.

I’ve seen plenty where someone slapped a new converter in and sent it. Band-aid fix. Six months later it’s back, flaring shifts, harsh engagements, lunching gears. At that point, you’re pulling it again.

Main Control Valve Body Wear

This isn’t abuse-related. This is design wear.

All three 6F units suffer from valve body bore wear. Doesn’t matter if it’s the 6F35, 6F50, or 6F55. Same story. Pressure leaks past worn aluminum. Solenoids chase ghosts. Shifts get weird.

The PTU is the quiet villain here.

Ford calls it minimal-service. Lifetime fluid. That’s a joke. The unit sits near the exhaust, cooks its oil, and has no easy drain. By the time anyone smells it, the damage is already started.

  • Seepage at the intermediate shaft seal.
  • Growling bearings once it’s too late.
