Overview
The second-generation Volvo XC90. SPA platform. 2016 and up. Same basic drivetrain idea across the board.
You’ve got a transverse 8-speed Aisin automatic up front. FWD or AWD depending on trim. If it’s a T8 plug-in hybrid, there’s an electric rear axle (ERAD) hanging off the back doing its own thing. No traditional transfer case on the hybrid. Two different worlds talking over software.
I’ve had a lot of these on lifts. The Tranny itself? Usually solid. The problems? They orbit around it. Valve body wear. Calibration weirdness. Driveline vibration. And on T8s, that rear electric axle making expensive noises once the warranty clock runs out.
No U.S. recall demanding gearbox replacement. No mass “grenading” event. But Volvo Technical Journals exist for shift logic behavior, selector faults, vibration diagnostics, ERAD bearing noise. That tells you something. Manufacturers don’t write procedures for fun.
Which Transmissions It Uses
There’s no mystery here. One transmission family for the U.S. market. No secret alternates. No dual-clutch experiment. No CVT nonsense.
Aisin AW TG-81SC

This is the early version. Good box. Strong gearsets. Handles torque fine. Where it stumbles is fluid neglect and valve body wear.
Aisin AW TG-81SD

Volvo didn’t reinvent the wheel. They refined it. Better software, some internal updates. Same basic bones.
On T8 models, the 8-speed drives the front axle. The rear axle is electric. No driveshaft between them. That means when something acts weird, you need to think software coordination, not just metal.
Main Failure Patterns
Shift-to-Park Reversion After Startup
TJ 36814. I’ve seen it. Customer starts the vehicle, slaps it into Drive fast, and boom — it pops back into Park.
It’s not lunching gears. It’s not grenaded clutches. It’s software timing. Modules are still waking up. The shift command gets interrupted.
Volvo’s answer? Procedure and calibration updates. Slow down. Let the system initialize. Annoying, yes. Destructive, no.
Gear Shift Module (GSM) Fault
TJ 32469 covers this one. Shifter goes dead. DTC ECM U010387. TCM P086087. Customer thinks the transmission blew up.
It didn’t.
Loose connection or communication dropout at the selector module. Sometimes it’s just a connector reseat. Sometimes the module gets replaced. The Tranny itself is usually fine. It’s the messenger that failed, not the gearbox.
Highway Speed Vibration – 70–78 mph (113–125 km/h)
This one causes a lot of finger-pointing. Customer feels vibration at 72 mph. Dealer says “transmission.” Independent shop says “tires.” Internet says “ticking time bomb.”
Volvo diagnostic guidance (including TJ 20803) lays out a step-by-step path:
- Propeller shaft imbalance or center bearing wear
- Active On-Demand Coupler (AOC) pump issues
- Companion flange / torsional damper problems
- Rear final drive concerns
In my experience, most of these end up being prop shaft related. I’ve replaced a pile of them. The vibration band is tight. Around 70–78 mph. Not random.
The transmission almost never causes that exact speed-specific vibration. It gets blamed anyway.
ERAD Bearing Noise – T8 Models
TJ 36665. Rear electric axle bearing wear.
You’ll hear it in EV mode first. Humming. Growling. Speed-related. Gets louder over time. Sounds like a wheel bearing but it’s not.
Repair is a bearing kit if caught early. If ignored, the whole ERAD can get ugly and expensive. This is one of those “out of warranty surprise” moments that hurts.

Valve Body Wear
This is where age shows.
At 80,000–120,000 Miles (128,000–193,000 km), I start seeing:
- Delayed engagement into Drive
- 2–3 shift flare
- Harsh 3–4 shift below 40°F (4°C)
That’s not the gearsets exploding. That’s hydraulic wear. Pressure control solenoids aging. Fluid breaking down. Debris circulating.
Drain the pan and you might see fine shavings. Not chunks. Not catastrophic. Just wear.

Drain-and-fill volume is usually 3–4 Quarts (2.8–3.8 Liters). Full capacity is higher, but you’re not getting all of it out without special procedures.
Skip fluid changes long enough and you’re rolling dice. It won’t explode overnight. It’ll just slowly get sloppy.

Early builds had more complaints. That’s common with new platforms. Software evolves. Hardware stays mostly the same.

- Rear humming in EV mode (T8)
- Selector lever acting dead or inconsistent
Fluid temperature can climb past 210°F (99°C) in heavy load or towing conditions. I’ve seen accelerated valve body wear in vehicles that run hot regularly.
Scan it. Don’t guess. Adaptive values and shift timing data tell stories.
When to Walk Away

A slipping 8-speed on this platform isn’t a cheap band-aid fix. It’s usually a replacement. And that number starts near $7,000 USD and climbs fast.

Bottom Line
The Aisin 8-speed in the second-gen XC90 is not a ticking time bomb. It’s a solid design that hates neglect.
The weak links live around it. AWD components. The hybrid rear axle. Long fluid intervals that sounded great in a marketing meeting.
Maintain it and it behaves. Ignore it and it gets expensive. Simple as that.
