Kia Soul gen 3 2020–present Transmission: Common Issues and Expert Verdict
Overview
The third-gen Kia Soul (SK3) didn’t reinvent the wheel. It just changed the transmission strategy and hoped nobody would notice.
Front-wheel drive only. No AWD. No transfer case. No PTU to explode. That simplifies things — but it also means when the tranny fails, the whole car is done moving. There’s no backup plan.
I’ve worked on these since they hit dealer lots in 2019. Two transmissions define this platform:
- IVT (internal code C0GF1) behind the 2.0L Nu MPI
- 7-speed dry dual clutch (internal code D7UF1) behind the 1.6L turbo
And right out of the gate, Kia had to issue campaigns.
SC199 – IVT Software & Replacement Campaign
Applies to certain 2020–2021 models built between 11/24/2018 and 04/17/2020.
Symptoms? Hesitation. No power when you need it. MIL on. Codes like P0730, P0731, P0741, P0867.
I’ve had customers tell me they pulled into traffic and the car just… paused. That’s not quirky. That’s dangerous.
Kia’s fix was a TCM software update. If slip codes persisted, they replaced the entire IVT assembly. Not a valve body. Not a sensor. The whole thing.
SA396 – 7DCT Synchronizer Failure
Early build 2019–2020 units. Build window 12/28/2018–01/15/2019.
Cracked 3rd/7th gear synchronizer hubs. When they crack, the box starts lunching gears. Harsh shifts. MIL. Sometimes grinding.
Repair? Full D7UF1 replacement. No half measures.
TRA083 – DCT Clutch Judder
Build range 11/15/2018–04/02/2020.
Dry clutch setup. Stop-and-go traffic turns them into a shudder machine. You feel it creeping through parking lots like the car forgot how to be smooth.
Fix is clutch pack replacement and adaptive relearn. If someone just clears codes and sends you home, that’s a band-aid fix.
If you’re buying used, run the VIN through NHTSA and Kia’s campaign system. I don’t care if the seller says “it’s all good.” Verify it.

Kia 7-Speed Dual-Clutch – D7UF1
- Dry dual-clutch automated manual
- 7 forward gears
- FWD layout
- Paired with 1.6L T-GDI
- Used 2020–2023 in U.S. market
No torque converter. No fluid cushion. It behaves like a manual that shifts itself. Treat it like an automatic and it’ll punish you.
No other transmission options were offered in this generation. That’s it.
Main Failure Patterns
IVT Hesitation & Slip Codes
The early IVTs were twitchy. Calibration-sensitive. Pressure control logic wasn’t dialed in.
Customer complaint usually sounds like this: “I hit the gas and nothing happened.” Then a surge. Then the MIL.
Once P0730 or P0867 shows up, you’re in the slip world. That’s where the chain and pulley faces start polishing each other the wrong way. Metal shavings show up in the pan. It’s subtle at first. Then it’s not.
Most replacements I’ve seen happened under 30,000 miles (48,000 km). That’s early. Too early.
The TCM update fixed a lot of them. The ones that didn’t respond? They got a new tranny.
D7UF1 Synchronizer Hub Crack
This one was messy but limited.
When the 3rd or 7th hub cracks, shift quality goes downhill fast. You feel shock on engagement. Sometimes a grinding sensation that makes you wince.
Kia didn’t mess around here. They replaced the whole transmission. Good move.
D7UF1 Clutch Glazing & Judder
Dry clutches hate creeping traffic. Period.
I’ve seen these start shuddering as early as 15,000 miles (24,000 km). Usually in urban drivers who ride the brake and throttle together in traffic.
Heat builds. Friction surface glazes. The clutch starts grabbing unevenly. That’s the shake you feel in a parking lot.
Once glazing sets in, relearn won’t fix it. You need a clutch pack.

Axle Seal Seepage
Above 60,000–80,000 miles (96,000–128,000 km), I’ve seen minor seepage at the front axle seals. Not catastrophic. Just normal wear.
Ignore it long enough and fluid drops. Fluid drops lead to bigger bills.

These are service bay benchmarks. Dealer pricing can go higher. Independent shops might shave a few hundred off.
And here’s the kicker — Kia’s 10-year/100,000-mile (160,000 km) powertrain warranty only sticks with the original owner. Second owner drops to 5-year/60,000-mile (96,000 km). That changes the math fast.

Warning Signs & Early Detection
- RPM flare without speed increase
- Delay when pulling into traffic
- Harsh 2–3 or 6–7 shifts
- Parking lot shudder
- Transmission MIL with ratio codes
Scan it. Always scan it. If you see ratio or pressure codes, don’t ignore them.
Fluid that smells burnt or looks metallic? That’s internal wear. Not cosmetic.
When to Walk Away
- No proof SC199 was completed
- Multiple IVT replacements on record
- D7UF1 with repeat clutch work
- Codes recently cleared with no paperwork
One early replacement under campaign? Fine.
Two or more tranny jobs before 60,000 miles? That’s a ticking time bomb.

No major federal class action tied directly to this generation’s IVT or D7UF1.
NHTSA complaint clusters focus on early 2020 IVT hesitation. That’s what led to SC199.
No active engineering analysis targeting these units at the federal level.
In the shop world, that means most issues were addressed early — not ignored.
Bottom Line
This platform isn’t junk. It’s sensitive.
The IVT works when maintained and properly calibrated. The D7UF1 can be smooth — until it isn’t, especially in city traffic.
If you want the lowest stress ownership, go post-2021 IVT with documented service history.
If you’re staring at an early 2020 turbo without campaign records, think hard.
Because when these trannies fail out of warranty, the bill isn’t cheap. And there’s no backup drivetrain to save you.
