Overview

The 2016–2020 third-gen Sorento (UM chassis) runs a straightforward drivetrain. No CVT weirdness. No dual-clutch experiment. Just a conventional hydraulic 6-speed automatic bolted to a transverse engine, feeding either the front wheels or an on-demand AWD setup with an electro-hydraulic rear coupling.

Simple on paper.

In the real world, it’s a mixed bag. I’ve had plenty of these on lifts. Some clean. Some leaking out the back like they just finished a marathon.

Before we even talk durability, there are documented regulatory issues you need to know about:

  • NHTSA Recall 22V-612 (Kia SC246) – 2016 – shift lever assembly may not lock correctly in Park. Rollaway risk. Not theoretical. Real safety issue.

Which Transmissions It Uses

There were no secret variants. No mid-cycle swaps. In the U.S. market, you get two 6-speed units.

AWD versions use an integrated PTU and an electronically controlled rear coupling — multi-plate clutch pack that engages when commanded. No mechanical center diff. It’s computer-managed torque transfer.

When it works, you never think about it.

When it fails, you absolutely do.

Main Failure Patterns

2016 Shift Calibration Mess

The 2016 model year had calibration issues. Hard 2–3 shifts. Clunky downshifts. Hesitation from a stop. TSB TRA069 addressed it with a TCM software update.

I’ve seen dozens of these. Owners thought the tranny was dying. It wasn’t. It was software. Reflash it, drive it, most calm down immediately.

Units that never got updated? They keep that awkward low-speed jerkiness. Annoying, not catastrophic. I’ve rarely seen clutch packs grenaded strictly from that calibration.

Rear AWD Coupling Oil Leaks

This is where the money goes.

TSB TRA086 documents oil leakage at the rear electro-hydraulic coupling. The housing and seal interface starts weeping. Sometimes slow. Sometimes messy.

In my experience, it shows up between 50,000 and 100,000 miles (80,000–160,000 km). Urban drivers see it earlier. Lots of heat cycles. Stop-and-go traffic cooks these.

Let it leak long enough and the clutch pack runs low on fluid. Heat spikes. Friction material breaks down. AWD light pops on. Then you’re pricing parts.

DTC Cluster P1820–P1834

These codes usually mean actuator motor overcurrent, motor overheating, pressure sensor voltage issues, or coupling overload conditions.

Shops will quote the whole assembly. And I get why. Partial repair can work, but I’ve seen actuator-only jobs come back. The labor overlap makes full replacement the safer bet.

Cheap fixes become expensive repeats.

Prop Shaft Heat Shield Contact – Early 2016

Some early AWD builds had a ridiculous clearance issue. Under hard acceleration or tight turns, the prop shaft taps the heat shield.

Sounds scary. Feels worse.

It isn’t a failing diff. It’s sheet metal. Reshape the shield, add clearance, done.

Internal Transmission Durability

The A6MF2 and A6LF2 aren’t ticking time bombs. They’re conventional hydraulic automatics. Clutch packs, planetary sets, valve body. Old-school design.

Service bay benchmark: I regularly see them pass 150,000 miles (241,000 km) if fluid wasn’t ignored.

Neglect them? Dark fluid, shavings in the pan, delayed engagement — now you’re lunching gears.
