How the Ford Taurus gen 6 2008–2009 Transmission Actually Fails
Overview
Let’s talk about the 2008–2009 Ford Taurus. Fifth-gen car. Big sedan. Simple on paper.
Underneath? One transmission. Just one. The 6F50. That’s it.
No CVT. No dual-clutch experiment. No manual option. Just a transverse six-speed automatic bolted to the 3.5L Duratec V6. Front-wheel drive standard. All-wheel drive optional, which adds a PTU hanging off the side of the tranny and a rear diff out back.
I’ve seen dozens of these. Some run 180,000 Miles (290,000 km) with nothing but fluid changes. Others grenade at 75,000 Miles (121,000 km) because someone ignored early warning signs.
No federal recall for the transmission or driveline on these years. That matters. But Ford did release TSBs — and if you know how to read between the lines, TSBs tell you where the weak spots live.
This platform is not junk. It’s also not bulletproof. It sits right in the middle. Maintenance-sensitive. Heat-sensitive. Early-build-sensitive.

The 6F50 is part of the Ford/GM joint transmission program. Cousin to the GM 6T70. Rated to handle roughly 263 lb-ft (357 Nm) from the Duratec V6. Nothing extreme. Nothing exotic.
It’s a torque-converter automatic. Conventional planetary gearsets. Electronic solenoid control. No magic inside.
AWD models bolt a Power Transfer Unit onto the side. That PTU is small. Runs hot. And when it leaks, it makes a mess.
That’s the entire lineup. No secret second option. No mid-year switch.
Main Failure Patterns
Speed Sensor Failures – P0715 / P0720
TSB 07-21-11 covers early-build 2008 cars — built on or before October 21, 2007.
I’ve had these roll in with customers swearing the tranny is dying. Slamming into gear. Refusing to upshift. Check Engine Light flashing like it’s possessed.
Scan it. P0715. P0720. Turbine Shaft Speed sensor or Output Shaft Speed sensor losing signal internally.
When those sensors glitch, the TCM panics. Throws the car into limp mode. Sometimes locks it in a single gear. Feels dramatic. Usually isn’t.
Most of the time, you replace the sensor and it’s done. If the owner kept driving it hard while it was banging gears, clutch wear follows. That’s when a small job turns expensive.
In my experience, these failures pop up between 60,000 and 120,000 Miles (97,000–193,000 km). Pretty normal range for electronic components sitting in hot fluid all day.
Loss of Reverse / Missing Gears
This one is ugly.
TSB 08-9-4. Early 2008 builds. Built on or before March 15, 2008.
Customer complaint usually starts with “Reverse just stopped working.” Or “It won’t go into 3rd.” Sometimes 5th disappears too.
Codes like P0733, P0735, P0756 show up. Gear ratio errors.
Inside the tranny, the intermediate shell and sun gear assembly start lunching themselves. When that assembly fails, metal shavings circulate through the case. Rear case bushings and bearings get chewed up. It’s a messy failure.
If caught early, you can rebuild and replace the hard parts. If it’s been driven for weeks grinding itself apart, the whole unit is usually toast. At that point, reman is cleaner and often cheaper long term.
4–5 or 5–6 Upshift Moan
TSB 09-11-3. 2009 models mostly.
You’ll hear a moan or buzz on the 4–5 or 5–6 upshift. Sounds like a bad bearing. Customers panic.
It’s cooler line resonance. Ford updated the lines. Replace them and the noise goes away.
It’s annoying. It’s not catastrophic. I’ve seen shops tear into transmissions for this. That’s a mistake.
PTU Seal Leaks – AWD Only
Now we get to the AWD models. The PTU.
TSB 09-25-7 addresses seal leaks at the right-hand intermediate shaft and the PTU cover.
Here’s the trick: look at the fluid color.
- Red fluid = transmission ATF leaking past the intermediate shaft seal.
- Dark gear oil = PTU cover seal failure.
The PTU runs hot. Really hot. Sustained highway driving can push it past 240°F (116°C). That little housing is small, fluid capacity is limited, and there’s no real cooling strategy. Ford calls it lifetime fluid. That’s a joke.
When the fluid cooks, seals harden. Bearings wear. Then you get gear whine. If ignored long enough, the PTU grenades and takes the driveshaft with it.
AWD models always cost more in the long run. Always.
Axle Seal Seepage
Front axle seals start weeping after 80,000–120,000 Miles (129,000–193,000 km). Not dramatic. Just annoying.
If the owner ignores it and the fluid level drops, the 6F50 doesn’t tolerate that well. Low fluid equals heat. Heat equals clutch wear.
Simple leak. Expensive outcome if neglected.

A full transmission replacement lands in the $4,500–$6,000 USD range at most independent shops. Dealers go higher. Sometimes much higher.

Early 2008 units are the ones I inspect hardest. Build date matters on this platform.
2009 cleaned up some of the early geartrain and sensor issues. AWD still carries PTU heat exposure regardless of year.

- Harsh 2–3 or 3–4 shifts
- Check Engine Light with P0715 or P0720
- Loss of reverse with gear ratio codes
- Fluid around PTU housing on AWD models

Pull the dipstick. Smell the fluid. Burnt odor means overheated clutches. Dark brown fluid means it’s been cooking.

When to Walk Away
No reverse and metal flakes in the pan? Walk.
Multiple ratio codes and slipping forward gears? Walk.
AWD model with PTU howling and leaking? Budget big or walk.
