How the Cadillac XT5 gen 1 2017–present Transmission Actually Fails

This wasn’t hype. The rear differential clutch control module could command more torque than it should during low-speed, wide-open throttle events on low-traction surfaces. Snow. Gravel. Wet grass. The rear prop shaft could see a shock load it didn’t like.
Could it grenade instantly? Rare. Could it create damage over time? Yes.
Fix was simple: reprogram the rear differential clutch control module. VIN check at a dealer tells you if it was done. If you’re shopping one of these and that update isn’t in the history, walk.
Service Update 17389 – 2017 PTU
Some early PTUs failed leak testing at the factory. Not wear. Not abuse. Just bad units. They were replaced.
If a 2017 still has its original PTU and no record of that update, you verify it. Always.
Later bulletins like 23-NA-195 and 23-NA-196 addressed rear driveline noise and AWD disengagement ratcheting. Not catastrophic. Annoying. Expensive when out of warranty.
This platform is not junk. But it’s calibration-heavy and fluid-sensitive. Ignore that, and it’ll punish you slowly.

Main Failure Patterns
2017 AWD Rear Differential Over-Torque
Software problem. Not a hardware disaster.
If the calibration wasn’t updated, the rear diff clutch could apply too aggressively. That shock traveled down the prop shaft. I’ve inspected shafts with visible stress marks after repeated events.
Most were fixed early in life. Today, this is mainly a used-car verification issue.
PTU Heat and Fluid Degradation

Early stage? Fluid exchange can help. Sometimes it’s just a band-aid fix. Advanced cases need a converter.
I’ve seen units continue shuddering after fluid service because the clutch surface was already damaged. Once that friction material is compromised, fresh fluid doesn’t undo it.

Rear Torque Tube Bearing Noise (23-NA-195)
2021–2023 builds.
Humming between 20–70 Miles (32–112 km). Steady cruise. No vibration. Just a low growl from the rear.
The issue lives inside the rear driveline torque tube assembly. Bearing damage. Not user abuse.
It doesn’t strand you. It drives you crazy.
AWD Disengagement Ratcheting (23-NA-196)
Some 2022–2023 builds developed a ratcheting sound when AWD disengaged. The inner differential carrier output shaft could contact the torque tube.
That’s a clearance issue. Not catastrophic. But it shouldn’t be happening on a premium crossover.

Multiple torque converter replacements on the same VIN. That’s a red flag.
